Two blogs in one day!
Last Thursday, my mom ran into a man at her work that was trying to get some assistance. He and his son were new in town and just trying to get some paper work taken care of. He told my mom he was a born again believer, unsolicited, and mom relayed to him he should visit Dad's church. So on Friday, they showed up at the church asking if they could put up their tent on the back lot of the church. Several people from the church of course said they could and they've been there since. The dad and son even came to worship with us this morning. But, since then, everyone at church and in the neighborhood has been looking over their shoulder. We all our wondering, what's the story here? And is this for real?? What is going to happen?
So after church this morning, everyone was doing the typical baptist thing. Going to lunch with family, afternoon naps, etc. But as I drove home, I was thinking about these two guys sitting outside next to their tent and its hot! It kind of hit me and made me a little sad that not one of us had invited them into our homes. I dare say anyone had invited them to lunch. Now, maybe someone had and they had simply declined the invitation, but probably not. We were willing to let them in the church to shower and use the facilities, willing to give them cold water, bring the food, willing to ask if they needed assistance. But we weren't willing to bring them into our air conditioned homes and sleep in our soft beds. We weren't willing to let them get involved with our families. That was kind of the line, that we weren't willing to allow anyone to cross. And why? Is it because we are fearful and rightfully so? A lot of people would say in this day and time..."you never know." Or is it because we just don't trust the Lord enough? I'm not sure the answer to that question. I'd love some feedback and comments on this. What would you do? Would you allow a stranger and his son to sleep in your home? Would you allow them to even know where you live?
A bit of a follow-up, I shared some of my thoughts with Dad and he and I went back up there just to see how they were doing and if they needed anything. As we were sitting there talking, another church member came by and offered for the father and son to come and stay in one of their apts. that is currently vacant.
I'll be sure to keep you updated and like I said, I'd love some feedback on this.
Beautiful, struggling with what to do in this world, Feet
