No Fastfood for a Year???

Ok, so last week I traveled to a church (felt like I was in the middle of nowhere) to speak about EA and missions stuff. I really enjoy speaking at churches and events...well, I always enjoy it afterwards.  When I speak, I'm always trying to challenge people to see mission work for what it really is, to see the urgency, and to give sacrificially! After this week's event at the "church in the boonies," I really felt convicted of my own lack of sacrificial giving. Now, I'm not saying all this to make others feel guilty or to say, "look at me," but to just give you the background to how I came to this idea / challenge/ adventure/ insane venture.

While I was at that "church in the boonies," I was particularly impressed by one young man at the church who's expressed his desire to go to Ecuador this year. I thought, "I'd really like to help him." I realized quickly though that I didn't have the means to support him financially. So with that on my heart and the combination of some conviction about sacrificial giving the Father and I had a little heart to heart on the way home. That's when I began toying with the idea of giving up something for a year. I toyed with the idea of giving up buying new clothes for a year, but let's face it...I'm me!! That would be an epic fail. Plus, others aren't going to be able to relate to doing without new clothes as much as they will say fast food. (for example, guys.... they don't care)  And, this is hopefully going to be more fun than the clothes idea and more blog worthy.

So I came to the conclusion I'd give up fast food for one year. I've already kind of explained where the idea came from but here are some other reasons why this is a great idea:

Sacrificial Giving
It's going to save money, money I can give to missions, etc.
It's healthier.
I'm pretty addicted to fast food in general.
It's a great idea (um, hello...because it's my idea)! LOL

After talking to a few friends and co-workers we've come up with some terms and conditions for this little adventure.

Starting tomorrow January 13, 2012, I Whitney Smith will give up all fast food. WOW! I said it.

After much thought and discussion it has been decided that "fast food" is determined as anything that isn't made to order. If its made to order, I can have it. So Subway is okay, Linzie's, Jimmy Johns, etc.

However and sadly, Chick-fil-A and the following examples are out:
McDonald's
Burger King
Krystal
White Castle
Zaxby's
Arby's
Whitt's
Sonic
Culver's
Taco Bell
KFC
Wendy's
Rally's
Dairy Queen
Long John Silvers
Captain D's
Buddy's BBQ
Pal's
Jack-n-the-Box

Beverages are deemed acceptable no matter the location.

Gifts and gift cards are acceptable with due cause. However, gifts without due cause defeat the purpose and cannot be accepted.

My Birthday as well as the holidays listed below are "this was an insane idea to begin with" feast days. I'm allowed to have feast days on those days and only those days.... limited to 3 meals per day. If the holiday falls on a day where normal businesses are closed a day may be substituted for that specific holiday during the same week.. Here is the list:

MLK Day
Valentine's Day or as I like to say Happy Sad
St. Patrick's Day
Good Friday
Administrative Professionals Day
Memorial Day
4th of July
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Halloween
Election Day (cause we are all gonna need it!)
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day
New Year's Day

When traveling internationally the fast food break is OFF! Hey, you're gonna need some McDy's if in a foreign land. However when traveling in country...rules are rules. No fast food!

If at a conference, camp, or other event and meals are served and are included in accommodations partaking of the forbidden list is allowed.

THERE IT IS!!! I'm gonna need some healthy accountability along the way and encouragement (not nagging) is loved and accepted! And I'm quite aware that if I fall and fail at this, its gonna be hard... like I just wore my cute new red heels and I'm on a date and just fell off the sidewalk hard fail!

Whew, now I'm hungry...glad its currently snowing and I don't have the temptation of going to get a Chick-fil-A Sandwich...oh bless!

Here goes this crazy quest by this crazy girl!

I am proud of your effort and the reasons behind it. You can do it. It will only be hard at first- and maybe after a 'feast' day. I got a kick out of your 'limited to three meals a day' clause :)
